Friday 25th May 1979:
Truro Murders, Man Charged
An Adelaide man appeared in court today charged with the murders of four young women whose bodies have been found in the Truro area, 100kms north-east of Adelaide. A fifth body has been found and police are searching for two more bodies, bringing the number of victims to a total of seven. James William Miller, 39, of no fixed address, stood silently in the dock at the Adelaide Magistrate's Court as the charges were read.
Miller, an unemployed labourer, is assisting police in the search for bodies. He is charged with murdering Veronica Knight, 18, Sylvia Michelle Pittman, 16, Vicki May Mowell, 26, and Connie Lordanides, 16. The skeletal remains of a fifth body were found earlier yesterday 4.5kms from where the other bodies were found. The body has been identified by dental charts and jewellery as that of Julie Mykata, 15, of St. Peters, who disappeared from Adelaide on 21st Jan. 1977.
Tests are being carried out to determine the cause of death and to see if there had been any sexual attack on the girl. The body of another teenage girl is believed to be buried at the beach north of Adelaide and another in a northern suburb.
About 20 uniformed and plain clothes policemen are scouring the area alongside a desolate dirt track leading into the back of the Dean rifle range.
